Of grunge’s Big 4, none encapsulated the downtrodden, rain-sodden bleakness of a Pacific Northwest winter better than Alice in Chains. Dirt, the band’s sophomore LP, suffocates the spirit with a gloomy mudslide of metal riffs. Its lyrics plumbed the depths of vocalist Layne Staley’s developing drug addiction, as well as isolated states of depression and the horrors of the Vietnam War. It all makes for an unlikely superstardom-cementing release, but the undeniably hooky heft of songs like “Them Bones,” “Rooster” and “Angry Chair” quickly positioned Dirt as one of the Nineties most important — albeit darkest — releases.
