Sturgill Simpson's seventh album, The Ballad of Dood & Juanita, is a concept album loosely based on his family's Civil War-era stories — the singer-songwriter's third album in 12 months and his most ambitious project to date. Simpson described the album as a "rollercoaster ride through all the styles of traditional country and bluegrass and mountain music that I love, including gospel and a cappella." It was written and recorded in less than a week, and features the same ace musicians who played on last year's Cuttin' Grassalbums.
