To ensure optimal growth, it is important to fertilize your lotus plant properly. For conventional fertilizer options like tablets or loose prills, wait until the plant has several floating leaves before adding fertilizer. Choose a high-quality fertilizer such as Waterlily World Tablets, Pondtabbs, or Landon's Aquatic Fertilizer, following the instructions closely based on pot size and soil amount. Stop fertilizing in late summer to allow the lotus to use up all the nutrients before going dormant, promoting better rhizome formation.
For slow-release fertilizer like Nutricote 14-4-14, follow the package instructions for the appropriate amount. Place the fertilizer around the bottom of the pot, then add soil and plant the rhizome. After 3 months, add extra Pondtabbs when growth becomes vigorous, continuing to add fertilizer until late summer. Avoid using 360-day fertilizer, as it releases nutrients for too long and may hinder rhizome development when the lotus goes dormant.
