While classic, Trent Reznor’s first NIN full-length is a most curious outlier in his catalog. Its icy drum machine clank and super-slappy-sounding synth bass are very era-specific. There’s a wonderfully weird playfulness to the nursery rhyme-imbued, late Eighties pop-rap flow he gives to “Down in It.” Things only got darker from here, but Trent drilled into our hole-like heads pretty quick that he was onto something special.
