The common juniper (Juniperus communis) is the only type of juniper found in Hungary. Its ripe, dark bluish-black, waxy, shiny, and meaty berry (galbulus) is larger than black pepper. The scent of juniper berry (Juniperi fructus) is fresh, balsamic, with subtle pine nuances. It is known as a distinctive flavoring for meat dishes, pickles, and beverages, and was also used as one of the components for embalming in ancient Egypt.
