Released in 2006, Deftones’ fifth album is a wholly immersive, nocturnal wonder of alt-metal lushness. Working alongside Pink Floyd/Kiss producer Bob Ezrin, the Sacramento quintet put together one of their most bombastic and massive sounding records to that point, with the album specializing in a mix of Novocain-bleary melody (“Cherry Waves”) and unnervingly twitchy, fully-screamed-and-mean-riffed post-hardcore (“Rapture”). While it’s got big time guest spots from System of a Down’s Serj Tankian and Giant Drag’s Annie Hardy, Saturday Night Wrist is sadly also the last Deftones album to feature founding bassist Chi Cheng, who would fall into a coma two years later following a car accident and pass away in 2013.
