Released in 2007, Baroness’ debut album was a fiery first step for one of modern metal’s most beloved forces. Right from the jump, it was clear that the band loved sludged-out and ultra-distorted riffs that nevertheless possessed a ton of melodic vulnerability. Guitarist-vocalist John Dyer Baizley’s vocals are a little rougher around the edges and beastly, compared to later days, yet his scratched-up howl on classics like “Rays on Pinion” and “O’Appalachia” are still earworm-anthemic. A ground-shifting release that paved the way for the band’s color-coded heaviness for years to come.
