The Hydrocleys Nymphoides, also known as Water Poppy, is a deciduous aquatic perennial perfect for pond margins. It thrives when floating stems extend into the water, blooming in the summer when water temperatures reach at least 70°F.
This exceptional aquatic plant thrives in 6" to 12" of water, preferring rich soil in shallow waters of 6" or less. While optimal growth occurs in these conditions, most plants can survive in water up to 12" deep.
Water Poppy can be left floating, but it grows best when planted. It produces oval, fleshy floating leaves and stunning golden 3-petaled flowers that float several inches above the leaves. Flowering occurs between June and September, making it an excellent choice for any water garden.
For ideal growth, Water Poppy requires full sun to partial shade, with a preference for full sun. It is suitable for zones 7 to 11, spreading from 1' to 5' with a spacing of 9" to 12" and a height of 6" to 1'. Planting depth should be between 6-12", using small pots with heavy loam soil and placing them in the shallows of your pond with the top of the pots submerged 2-6" beneath the water's surface.
To protect your Water Poppy during the winter, bring it indoors before the first frost and overwinter it indoors with strong grow lights in tubs or aquariums. Add some small fabric planters for Water Poppy for even better results!
