Fairy Moss, also known as Azolla Caroliniana, is a small floating fern that can also grow in mud. The color of this plant ranges from green to red, depending on the level of sunlight it receives. It forms dense mats on the surface of the water and is a great supplemental food source for Koi and Goldfish.

This unique plant looks especially stunning when allowed to grow on a ledge in a waterfall or stream, and it thrives in terraria as well. One portion is approximately the volume of a 1/2 cup measure.

Azolla Caroliniana is a member of the Salviniaceae family, along with the genus Salvinia. It is a fantastic cover for water or mud and provides a great source of food for fish. This plant can be grown over algal mats in drip zones in waterfalls and can tolerate considerable cold temperatures.

In the spring and summer, Azolla Caroliniana is bright fluffy green, while in the late summer and fall, it turns more reddish/brown with densely packed leaves. This plant thrives in full sun to partial sun and is hardy in Zones 7-10. It produces flowers in the summer and has a trailing/spreading growth habit.
