Product Description

We've rounded up our favorite chili oils and chili crisps in one collection that spans the texture and taste spectrum of the age-old Chinese condiment that has recently taken America by storm. Try them individually, or buy the collection at a 10% discount off individual prices.

While all four brands are built on a base of dried chilies and oil, from there they diverge wildly. On the Mala Market "chili crisp scale," they range from a traditional fragrant chili oil, to an aromatic chili oil with added crispy nuts and umami, to a chunky garlic crisp with almost no oil, to an oil-based chunky mushroom sauce.

Take the lids off and taste them all for a magical mystery chili oil tour. Which will you like best? And what will you put them on?

All four of these brands are moderately hot and have no additives or preservatives. Click on individual products to go to their page and learn more.

Blank Slate Kitchen Sichuan Chili Oil

This is a traditional-style fragrant chili oil flavored with only aromatics and Chinese spices. It is about 2/3 oil, 1/3 crisp, and can be used as an ingredient in sauces or as a condiment. Its main flavor note is numbing Sichuan pepper backed by multiple Chinese warm spices.

Producer: Blank Slate Kitchen, Vermont

Size: 6 ounces

Ingredients: infused oil (non-GMO sunflower and/or canola oil, ginger, spices garlic), Sichuan peppercorns, red chili flakes, toasted sesame oil, sea salt

Allergens: sesame

The Mala Market's Chengdu Crispy Chili Oil

This is a Chengdu-style chili crisp, built on a base of Chinese chilies, Sichuan pepper and roasted rapeseed oil with crispy nuts and hints of soy-sauce umami. Made by national-level master chefs in Sichuan, it is about 2/3 oil and 1/3 crisp and is meant to be used in Sichuan sauces as well as as an everyday condiment.

Producer: Made for The Mala Market in Chengdu by Sichuan Masters' Cooking

Size: 8.3 ounces

Ingredients: roasted rapeseed oil (caiziyou infused with onion and ginger), erjingtiao and zidantou chilies, peanut, soy sauce (soybean, salt, caramel), sesame, salt, garlic, sugar, Tribute Sichuan pepper, spices, yeast extract

Allergens: peanut, soybean, sesame

KariKari Garlic Chili Crisp

In our lineup of chili oils and crisps, KariKari is the crispiest. In fact, kari means crispy in Japanese, and the jar is chock-full of crispy garlic slices along with bits of peanut, fermented soybean, shallot and chili, with very little additional oil. Use this Japan-inspired crisp not so much in cooking, but as a crunchy, super-umami condiment.

Producer: KariKari Foods, SeattleSize: 6 ounces (170g) Ingredients:  Non-GMO expeller-pressed canola oil, peanut, garlic, chilies, cane sugar, shallot, sesame oil, fermented soybean (soybean, salt), Sichuan pepper, spices, mushroom seasoning (mushroom powder, salt, mushroom extract, vitamin B, calcium), sea salt, gluten-free tamari powder (soybean, salt, cane sugar, non-GMO maltodextrin)

Allergens: peanut, sesame, soybean. Manufactured in a shared facility that also produces tree nuts, dairy, wheat, eggs and shellfish.

Hot Pot Queen Wild Mushroom Chili Sauce

Showing another face of chili oil, this one is truly more of a sauce than a chili oil—thicker, chunkier and more chewy than crispy. Similarly, while it also features hot chilies and fermented soybeans, its defining taste is the titular wild mushrooms, namely varieties of shiitake and porcini from the mountains of Yunnan.

Producer: Hot Pot Queen, ChongqingSize: 10.6 ouncesIngredients: rapeseed oil, shiitake mushroom, porcini mushroom, chili, soybean paste, garlic, soy sauce (soybean, salt, wheat), soybean, sugar, sesame, Sichuan pepper, spices

Allergens: soybean, sesame, wheat
